Tree of Life by karincharlotte Tree of Life by karincharlotte
Just a simple exercise I did with my beginners watercolour class a few years ago. It is now being re - worked into a mosaic in workshop I am currently doing with a mosaic artist and a group of students.
This is a watercolour on watercolour paper. ( can't remember what kind).
Aprox. 21 cm x 21 cm

I love this. It's a pity I don't live in Melbourne otherwise I would join your classes for mosaic.

Thank you very much for your lovely comment. I did this in one of my watercolour classes. The lesson was to do a watercolour mandala. I painted along with the class. A friend of mine, who is a mosaic artist made this into a large mosaic in a workshop we did together. I really should add the link to this of the mosaic. Thank you again.

Thanks, Anj! This one actually doesn't use salt effects, but rather cauliflowers. :D

LOL... just goes to show that you can use just about anything to make art. I remember when I was a kid in school... and doing potato painting. Gosh! I hadn't thought about that forever!

Anj

Ha, ha, not sure you are joking. By cauliflowers I don't mean I used vegetables to apply the paint, but rather this is what they call it when wet paint meets a dryer patch, and then it creates a kind of bloom or backrun. You can also get that by dropping water into a damp wash.

 Oh my, I had it wrong. Yes, I thought you were using a cauliflower. But I wasn't joking about the potato painting.

My memories are vague, but as I remember we cut the potato into pieces or slices (when I was really young it was in half so there were larger pieces for little hands). Then we'd carve a design into the potato. Next came the paints. I think we used tempera. We'd dip the potato in the paints and then apply it to the paper. For kids we made some nice abstract art. :D The potato gave the stamps some unique textures.

Hugs,
Anj

I really love this design. Did you use salt? Wish I could find a local instructor like you.

Thanks for the kind feedback. I think I did use a bit of salt in this, but also some backruns or coli-flowers caused by dropping water into a wash that is starting to dry. I hope you can find a local instructor. If not, you can still learn some things from youtube, and watercolour instruction dvd's, books, and just from playing with watercolour. Good luck!
