Psychadelicat by karincharlotte Psychadelicat by karincharlotte
This is the same one as the previous, Abstract Pussicat, after I could not leave it alone. I decided to experiment with it some more, for better or worse, probably worse. Anyway, it is now at the framer, and I'm hoping the red and black frame will somehow transform it into something worthy. Karl was a bit upset with me for not leaving it the way it was. Oh well, it's only a painting after all....
So here's my question. Do you think I've ruined it?

Mixed media (watercolour/gesso/gouache/prismacolour) on Arches 300gsm smooth paper. Approximately 20 X 30 cm.
Update: I got it back from the framer, and it looks fabulous!
PS. I'm a member of Hobson's Bay Arts Society. Here is their new websites. :)

Well, it happens sometimes. You think you can improve something, and then it doesn't work. In the end I experimented with Gesso, and managed to rescue it. :D

No, I think this one is better. I opened both in separate tabs and compared them. I was ready to be upset because I really like the first one, but I think this version is better. The colors are more harmonious.

Hi Anj! Thank you for caring and sharing.
It often happens that I get attached to earlier stages, and then get angry at myself when I try to improve something, and it ends up worse. Making mistakes is part of my creative process, and I discover some interesting techniques this way. For instance with this particular piece, I used Gesso in the top right hand shape and the shape above the cat's head.
Thanks again.

Thanks for telling me that. Now can I ask a dumb question? What is "gesso"?

Well, the change to the "gesso" and the more pastel colors is part of what I think is an improvement. It makes the cat stand out more.

Did you use salt effects on the upper and lower left?

And you're welcome!
Hugs,
Anj

Yes, I did use salt effects on this. I've added the link to a website with information about Gesso.

Thanks for the info on Gesso... Now I know what it is. And I like salt effects. I remembered how salt can do strange things to color so I kinda recognized it in your painting. It might have been during freezing or canning that I saw the salt affect colors in a way similar to your painting.

Anj

There is a trick to doing salt effects. For instance I also pre-wet the paper, then I apply the wash (paint mixed with water) and sprinkle on the salt right away. I recommend practising to get the right ratio of water to paint. If the wash is too dry it doesn't work, if it's very wet, you get a different kind of texture than if you use less water in your wash. It can be very interesting to experiment with salt to get a variety of textures and effects.

Yes! Isn't it funny. I don't paint but due to some other things I do (like canning and freezing vegetables, etc.) I've discovered what you describe above. For the life of me I can't remember exactly what I was doing... but it was something with color and a vegetable that "bled" and coarse salt... maybe it was pickles... sigh... can't remember!

But then again, I'm sure those vegetables that "bleed" their colors might have been used for some of the first paints!
Big hugs!

Oh, Ok, I guess my watercolour instructions won't really do you much good then, lol. My mother used to make jams and pickles, but I'm not a very good home maker. I'm just as happy to buy my pickled foods from the deli or the gourmet shops.

No you've not ruined it, I would have both of them on the wall in my house as they both give of different feelings and moods; plus weather it's right to say as a fellow artist you have here a great sales product as there are lots of people who love cat art and that is not a bad thing to look at something on a commercial point of view, if I could not own the original then I would certainly buy a canvas copy or one of each so don't worry it's great.

Thank you very much for your kind words of wisdom and encouragement. It makes me feel a lot better.
It's not the first time that I kept fiddling with a painting after it was already finished, and then someone came along and bought it anyway,ha,ha.:D
It is very true about cats being commercially viable. I've sold quite a few. Fortunately I love painting them. Thank you again.
